According to a story given in Skanda Purana, it's a matter of ancient times. A widowed Brahmini would go to her son daily to beg and return by evening. As usual, one day when she was returning with alms, she saw a very beautiful child on the river bank, however the Brahmin didn't know who the boy was and whose?

Actually the name of that child was Dharmagupta and he was the prince of Vidarbha country. The father of the boy who was the king of Vidarbha, the enemies killed him in battle and took the kingdom under him. Dharmagupta's mother also passed away in mourning of the father and the enemies drove Dharmagupta out of the kingdom. Seeing the condition of the child, the Brahmin adopted him and took care of him like his son.

A few days later, Brahmani went with his two children to Dev Dev temple, where he met Rishi Shandilya. Rishi Shandilya was a noted sage, whose wisdom and wisdom were discussed everywhere.

The sage told the Brahmin about the kid's past, that's, the death of his parents, which the Brahmin was very sad to hear. The sage advised the Brahmani and his two sons to perform Pradosh fast and explained the entire law and order related to it. According to the rules laid down by the sage, the Brahmani and the kids performed the fast, however they didn't know what could be the result of this fast.

After a few days both the boys were doing Van Vihar, then they noticed some Gandharva girls there which was very beautiful. Prince Dharmagupta was attracted to a Gandharva girl named Anshumati. After some time both Rajkumar and Anshumati started liking each other and Kanya called Rajkumar to meet his father Gandharvaraj for marriage. When Kanya's father came to know that the child is the prince of Vidarbha country, he got them both married by the order of Lord Shiva.

Prince Dharmagupta's life started changing back. He struggled a lot and rebuilt his Gandharva army. The prince regained control of the Vidarbha country.

After some time he came to know that whatever he has achieved in the past was the result of Pradosh Vrat done by Brahmani and Prince Dharmagupta. Pleased along with his true worship, Lord Shiva gave him the power to fight every trouble in life. From that point, it was acknowledged within the Hindu religion that anyone who will worship Shiv on the day of Pradosh and concentrate on listening to the story of Pradosh fast and will never have to face any trouble or poverty for 100 births.

Many stories, myths and poems have been written on the six Nakshatras. These six constellations are the six celestial goddesses according to Hindu myth, who brought up six infants and together appeared as the god of six faces.

Therefore they're known as Kartikeya. He is called Kartikeya, the second son of Lord Shiva. According to myths, Lord Shiva has created Muruga with his third eye. The names of these six constellations are Tattpurusham, Aghoram, Sadyojatam, Vamdevan, Isanam, and Adhomukham. Lord Muruga is known by these sixteen names.

Due to this fact, worship of any one of these sixteen constellations is as effective as the worship of Lord Muruga. They're worshiped by lighting a lamp in a row. On the day of this puja, devotees light a lamp in the courtyard. It is usually known as Karthigai Deepam or the birth anniversary of Lord Muruga.

It's believed that on this day Lord Shiva appeared in front of Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma as an endless lamp. The reason for this incarnation of Shiva was to choose the best of the two gods. Both Lord Brahma and Vishnu had differences over who among them was the perfect. To decide this difference, Lord Shiva took the form of Anant Deep Shikha and said to those two gods, that you have to find the beginning and end of this Deep Shikha i.e. Lord Shiva's head and his feet.

In this quest, both gods were removed, but Lord Vishnu returned soon and he accepted that he could not find any beginning or end to it. After this, Lord Brahma came. He said that he had got to see Lord Shiva's head, but this was a lie and Lord Shiva understood it. Ultimately, Lord Shiva told him that neither a temple of Lord Brahma will be built on earth nor will he be worshiped in any method. On this method, Lord Vishnu proved superior to Brahma. On today people worship Lord Shiva and later on this day started to be celebrated as Kartikeya Maha Deepam.
