According to ancient legends, Omkareshwar was also known as Omkara-Mandhata, the pilgrimage city in ancient times.

King Mandhata, doing penance for the benefit and salvation of his topics, had asked Lord Shiva the boon to be ensconced on this.

Since then, the hill here has been built within the shape of Omkareshwar Tirtha. The word is first pronounced with the mouth of the creator, and the recitation of Veda isn't done with out utterance. Hence the name of this shrine is Omkareshwar.

There are 33 crore deities here, who give the sight of the river Narmada.
